VAMC Rooftop Garden & Patio |

The VA’s intent was to construct a roof-top patio attached to the exterior wall of the existing Polytrauma Unit. Consideration had to be given to safety and accessibility by Traumatic Brain Injury patients and their families. It was also paramount we create a therapeutic environment for rest and healing. Full spectrum lighting is important to patients recovering from brain injury but protection from the elements must also be considered to make the patio functional. Perimeter security had to be integrated. When Cornerstone Architects first stepped on to the VA’s rooftop, we were environmentally assaulted. The roof was cold, covered with tar and stones and had nothing to look at. Here was a hostile place intended for brain injury patients recovering from war wounds to feel at peace and heal faster. We decided to create a green roof and design an inviting space with various plantings. The green roof conquered 2 issues. We were able to give patients a beautiful and healing environment as a retreat from their beds. Also, environmentally, we gave the VA an increased roof life span and a reduction in storm water run off.
